Save the Last Dance for Me
This annual event is enjoyable and successful because of the hard work, enthusiasm and commitment of the Navy-Marine Corps Ball Committee volunteers who dedicate countless hours to planning every detail — from decorations to menu selection; logistics to hospitality; program to contributions and publicity. Thanks to their platinum efforts and the consistent benevolent support of our corporate partners, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society will be able to improve the quality of life for our active duty and retired Marines, Sailors and their families. The 2010 Ball, a very successful and enjoyable event, set yet another record, raising more than $582,000 in corporate and individual donations. More than 1,000 guests enjoyed music by the President’s Own Marine Corps Band and the U.S. Navy Band, remarks from the Chief of Naval Operations and Commandant of the Marine Corps, and a speech by Guest of Honor Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii. Senator Inouye, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient for his service in World War II as a member of the Army’s 442nd Regimental Combat Team, currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Defense. His remarks focused on volunteerism, the volume of the Society’s casework, and on fundraising. He expressed sincere surprise that 75% of our organization’s funding comes from inside the Navy-Marine Corps family, and he promised to share his observations during his upcoming committee meetings.
After accepting the very large presentation check from the 2010 Navy-Marine Corps Ball Chair, Nan Blake, and thanking her and her committee members for their creativity, commitment and hard work, Society President Steve Abbot encouraged guests to join him and his wife, Marjorie, on the dance floor to enjoy music by the U.S. Navy Band’s component, The Cruisers. The Ball Committee and Society thank again all corporate and individual sponsors and those in attendance whose charitable gifts and participation in the Silent Auction made the 2010 Navy-Marine Corps Ball another record-setting success.
