Hurricane Relief
and Donations

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society remains sincerely concerned for the safety and welfare of our Sailors, Marines and their families whose jobs have them in the Gulf Coast region of the country. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Society opened a number of its offices in the region and established temporary offices nearby. Our staff members helped families with funds for evacuation prior to the storm, and since it passed, they have begun the longer-term process of helping to meet the needs of thousands of families who will be displaced for days, weeks, and months ahead. So far, Society Caseworkers have helped more than 4,500 service members; $1.8 million in disaster relief assistance.

Active duty and retired Sailors, Marines and their families (and families from all branches of our Armed Forces) can seek and receive financial assistance at any of our NMCRS offices. Service families may also receive assistance at American Red Cross Offices or through our sister relief agencies (Air Force Aid Society, Army Emergency Relief, and Coast Guard Mutual Assistance) at their offices throughout the region. For after hours assistance, or if you are not near any of these offices, simply call 1 877 272-7337.

Individuals, organizations and corporations wishing to make a donation to help these families may make an online contribution by selecting this link, or you may send a check payable to NMCRS (or Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society) and mail it to our Headquarters address: 875 North Randolph Street, Suite 225, Arlington VA 22203. In the lower left corner of the check, please annotate Hurricane Relief. All donations will be acknowledged and we appreciate the benevolence of patriotic Americans across the nation.

We’d like to thank the many patriotic organizations and individuals who have made contributions to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society designed to support our Shipmates. Three organizations deserve special recognition. The single largest source of hurricane relief revenue has been the result of an initiative by the Navy Federal Credit Union. Their members have donated $446,800 already, and charitable gifts continue to flow into a special fund they created on our behalf. The U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association has strongly encouraged its membership to contribute, and the network of Navy Chaplains has spearheaded special collections at churches and chapels around the world. These efforts have resulted in a spike in on-line donations and those received through the mail. Since the storm, the Society has received approximately $1.1 million to support hurricane victims thus far.

Effective Date: 11 October 2005
