2011: A Year of Steady Financial Assistance to Sailors, Marines and Their Families

Since 1904, more than 4 million Sailors, Marines and their families have received $1.5 billion in interest-free loans and grants from the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.  During the past year, Navy-Marine Corps Relief responded to 96,061 requests for financial help; disbursing more than $48 million in interest-free loans and outright grants.  The Society provided assistance to nearly one of every five Marines and Sailors in 2011.  A few highlights of our activities:

  •  The Society’s Visiting Nurses interacted with more than 1,500 wounded Marines and Sailors and their families, making 20,200 contacts with these military heroes
  • Our staff responded to natural disasters, helping 1,800 families impacted by hurricanes, tornados, wildfires, earthquakes and the Operation Tomodachi evacuation from Japan
  • $1.6M in financial support to 704 Navy and Marine Corps widows
  • 110,000 customers visited our 27 Thrift Shops to purchase low-cost clothing, uniforms and household items
  • $15.4M in Quick Assist Loans to 51,389 active duty clients

The Society remains financially sound and properly positioned to continue its uninterrupted support of Marines and Sailors.  When Navy and Marine Corps families need financial assistance, we hope they will always make the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society their first resource.
