Joseph A. McAlinden Divers Scholarship Program

Qualifications

The Joseph A. McAlinden Divers Scholarship Program provides education scholarships of $500 to $3000 per year to pay for tuition, books, fees, room, and board.

To qualify you must be one of the following: 

  • An active duty or retired Sailor or Marine completing an accepted program for advanced diver training, certification, or license (includes reservists on active duty over 90 days)
  • A child or spouse of an active duty or retired Sailor or Marine diver (includes reservists on active duty over 90 days) and completing an accepted program for advanced diver training, certification, or license
  • A child or spouse of an active duty or retired Sailor or Marine diver (includes reservists on active duty over 90 days) and studying Oceanography, Ocean Agriculture, or Aquaculture

You must also have a demonstrated financial need for assistance. If you’re studying Oceanography, Ocean Agriculture, or Aquaculture, you must be a full-time student, enrolled for the entire academic year, and pursuing a first undergraduate degree at a qualifying school.

Applying for this scholarship

You can apply for this scholarship anytime during the academic year. You’ll need these documents:

  • Completed application form (PDF)
  • Official school transcripts or diving training class invoice
  • Certificate of Service Letter or DD 214
  • Student Aid Report (SAR) from completed FAFSA

Once you submit all the required documents, we’ll let you know whether you’re eligible for the scholarship. If you’re awarded the scholarship, we’ll send an award letter to the email address you list on your application.

Scholarship disbursement

If you receive a scholarship, the funds will be sent directly to your school to cover the upcoming school year. To receive a Divers scholarship in the future, you’ll need to reapply for each academic year.
