Overview

Every year, NMCRS helps thousands of active duty and retired Sailors, Marines and their families during tough times, like floods and disasters, family emergencies, transportation issues, and unforeseen expenses. Every interest-free loan, grant or service we provide is thanks to the generosity of people like you. We don’t receive Government funding.

FAQs

  • Is my donation to Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society tax deductible?

    View

Yes. NMCRS is a registered 501(c)(3) charity, your donation may be tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. Tax ID number is 53-0204618.

The Society provides a tax receipt for all donations. If the donation is made online, an electronic receipt will be sent to the email address provided. For all donors who contribute $250 or more in a calendar year, a tax letter is sent in January, reflecting the full amount of tax-deductible donations received by NMCRS in the prior year.

  • Where does Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society receive its funding?

    View

The Society is the beneficiary of the annual Active Duty Fund Drive and Retiree Fund Drive. The Society also receives contributions from the general public, as well as corporations, foundations and other partners. Additionally, many donors choose to donate through their estate with end-of-life gifts.

Funding for the Society’s mission also is derived from the repayment of NMCRS interest-free loans and investment income. The Society’s annual audited financial statement provides more detail on the Society’s financials.

  • What percentage of my donation supports Sailors and Marines?

    View

The Society makes every effort to ensure we are good stewards of donated dollars. About 84% of donated dollars support interest-free loans and grants, as well as the Visiting Nurse program, Budget for Baby classes, education scholarships, and other Society programs and services.

  • May donations be designated to a specific program or location?

    View

The Society provides assistance around the globe, 24/7, without regard to military service, pay grade or duty station. Unrestricted donations best enable the Society to provide assistance when and where it is most urgently needed.

  • Does Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society receive federal funding?

    View

No. NMCRS does not receive any federal funding.

  • Does Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society participate in the Combined Federal Campaign?

    View

No. In 1957, President Eisenhower established a uniform fundraising program within the Federal Government which evolved into the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). President Eisenhower’s Executive Order, and follow-on implementing directives, carved out and excluded fundraising “conducted by members of the armed forces among their own members” from the CFC. Therefore, the military aid societies, including Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, do not participate in the Combined Federal Campaign.

Instead, each military service conducts an active duty fund drive annually in March to benefit their military aid society.

  • Where can I find Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society’s most recent audited financial statement and IRS 990?

    View

These documents can be found here.

  • What is the annual Active Duty Fund Drive (ADFD)?

    View

In the tradition of taking care of each others, the annual Active Duty Fund Drive allows Sailors and Marines the opportunity to support each other when there is a financial crisis. The ADFD has two purposes:

To raise awareness of the programs and services available to active duty Sailors and Marines

To raise funds to support the programs and services offered by the NMCRS.

The more knowledge Sailors and Marines have about our resources, programs, and services (and when and how to get assistance) the more operationally ready they will be.

For more information on the Active Duty Fund Drive.

  • What is the Annual Retiree Fund Drive?

    View

The Retiree Fund Drive is mailed each year to retired Marines and Sailors; Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is the beneficiary of this appeal. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the programs and services available to retirees and their families, and to raise funds to support the programs and services offered by the Society.

  • I have an allotment from my military pay. How can I make changes to this?

    View

If you are an active duty Sailor or Marine, please complete Form DD 2558. The completed form should be submitted to your finance team – PSD CPPA (Navy) or IPAC (USMC).

If you are a retired Sailor Marine, please contact NMCRS Development Department at giving@nmcrs.org. The Society will submit your request to DFAS, this includes requests to stop, increase or decrease your allotment from your retired military pay. It may take 60 or more days from the time the request is received by DFAS until it is implemented.

  • May I include Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society in my estate plans?

The Clarence Dillon Society recognizes individuals who have named the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society as a beneficiary of their estate. Enrollment in this honorary society is simply a matter of advising the Society that you have created an estate gift such as a bequest intention or a charitable trust, or have designated the Society as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. Donors may also establish a charitable gift annuity with the Society and receive annual payments for life; upon their death, the remainder of the annuity is put to work serving Sailors, Marines and their families.

The Society encourages you to work with your attorney and financial advisor to plan charitable donations that work best for you; NMCRS does not provide legal or tax advice.
