Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Selected as South Carolina Secretary of State “Angel”


Columbus, SC, Wednesday, November 20, 2013 – South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond announced today that the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) was selected for the 2013 Angel award, along with nine other nonprofit organizations. Annually, for the past 18 years, the Secretary of State has recognized organizations that exemplify charitable giving in South Carolina. Pam Mentzer, Director NMCRS Beaufort and Kim Bradley, NMCRS Combat Casualty Assistance Visiting Nurse attended the ceremony today representing all the Society employees and volunteers who help to carry out our mission.

“It is a privilege to serve the Navy and Marine Corps community of South Carolina.  We are honored to be selected by the State of South Carolina for this prestigious award” said Admiral Steve Abbot, President and CEO, NMCRS. 

NMCRS has three offices in South Carolina located on military facilities in Beaufort, Charleston and Parris Island.
Last year, these offices provided:
• 1,350 active duty and retired Sailors and Marines with $760,000 for emergency and unexpected financial needs
• Free, in-home visits by registered nurses to combat wounded Marines, Sailors and their family members, and to all eligible USN/USMC families to assist with health issues and concerns
• Budget for Baby workshops to help expectant Navy and Marine Corps parents prepare for the arrival of a new family member
• Budget counseling and financial education to help Sailors and Marines and their spouses learn to manage their personal finances
