Volunteer Duty Serve in a Thrift Shop

The Society operates on-base thrift shops to serve active duty and retired Navy and Marine Corps families. Here, families can purchase gently used clothing, uniforms, and household goods at affordable prices. Income from these shops support Society programs.

Profile of a Thrift Shop Volunteer

Since thrift shops are operated only by volunteers, positions range from shop lead to cashier. Thrift shop volunteers use and develop retail experience, including displaying and organizing merchandise, handling cash and sales, and managing a store. If you enjoy interacting with people and providing them the value of a good bargain, this may be the place for you. Volunteers also enjoy the social support of working on a close-knit team.

What Volunteers Can Expect

Positions require you to serve on-site at our thrift shops, and there is flexibility in hours. Volunteers receive training on thrift shop procedures, uniform sale guidelines, cash handling procedures, and customer service. There are also some physical requirements for sorting donated items.

    Donated merchandise helps us offer low-cost, quality items. Generally, donated items can be accepted during regular thrift shop business hours; however, check with your local Society thrift shop to find out if they have a donation drop-box.
