With field offices around the globe, the nonprofit will provide emergency aid and financial assistance to those impacted by loss of income.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 1, 2025) — In the midst of the government shutdown, up to 2.1 million military personnel could go without pay, even as they continue to protect and serve the American people. For many service members and their families, who live paycheck to paycheck, the sudden halt in income could have immediate and serious consequences.
Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) will respond swiftly and compassionately, offering emergency financial assistance and resources to active-duty Navy and Marine Corps service members and their families. With field offices around the world, NMCRS can help cover basic living expenses such as food, rent, utilities and other urgent needs resulting from the shutdown.
Retired Navy Rear Adm. Dawn Cutler, chief operations officer for NMCRS, emphasized the organization’s commitment, “The government shutdown could have a significant impact on active-duty Sailors, Marines and their families, and as we have for over 120 years, NMCRS is prepared to support those who protect our country. Military life presents a variety of unique challenges, and the loss of income from the shutdown can compound those challenges exponentially.”
In addition to emergency financial aid, NMCRS offers financial education resources to help families manage challenging times. These include guidance on working with creditors and financial institutions, budgeting strategies, advice on delaying or deferring non-essential purchases and more.
NMCRS also offers a variety of other services, including financial, educational and other forms of assistance through their offices in over 213 locations throughout the U.S. and around the globe. All NMCRS services and programs are made possible through generous donations.
